Kaiser Chiefs Westonbirt Arboretum Friday, June 17 Oh my god! I predicted a riot of solid rock tunes and this is what we got in spades, and not just from the Kaiser Chiefs, as their young support band also rocked the arboretum.

The natural amphitheatre, surrounded by trees twinkling with coloured lights as dusk fell, was the perfect setting as an explosion of Kaiser Chiefs chart hits unfolded from these royals of rock.

Lead singer Ricky Wilson performed some gazelle-like gymnastics, jumping on top of the drum kit, on the amp stand and even singing from the lighting rig at one point. It's no wonder he stays so slim, he was charged with boundless energy, whipping up the crowd and wowing them with his extensive vocal range and wise-cracking banter.

Everything Is Average Nowadays, Never Miss A Beat, the new single Falling Awake, Hole In My Shoe and Parachute were all featured alongside a powerful rendering of the anti war anthem Cannons from their album Education Education Education and War.

Along with Ricky's antics, Andrew White played a mean guitar, while Simon Rix on bass guitar and Vijay Mistry on drums were the hardcore of a wall of rhythm and keyboard wizard Nick Bains gave the melodic oomph to the set.

The young rock band who opened the gig were Spring King, a band to watch as they gave us some strong solid rock numbers that they had written themselves, their performance was tight and the close harmonies adventurous.

Families, couples, groups of friends all singing along to the familiar Kaiser Chiefs hits proved this was no Angry Mob. As the first notes of Ruby rang out even the bar staff in the beer tent began singing in unison, while friendly policeman lent their helmets to a bunch of girls dancing at the side of the stage and joined in with good humour.

The light show was spectacular against the trees and the night sky. The smoke machine billowed out across the heads of the crowd adding to the drama of the music. The night stayed fine despite a thunderous down pour while we were travelling to the concert but there would have been no dampening of spirits as the band gave us such a night of musical drama.

I Predict a Riot finished the official set with but the guys came back for three more songs finishing with the ever popular Oh My God in a grand finale.

One of my favourite Kaiser Chiefs' songs is Everyday I Love You Less and Less, but after this gig it is every day I love Kaiser Chiefs more and more. - Flicky Harrison
