MARION SAUVEBOIS meets a group with an eye on the next generation FRIENDLY, inclusive and nurturing is what Wootton Bassett Light Operatic Society’s youth section, WBLETS, has aspired to be since it began.

The group was formed 12 years ago after WBLOS recruited children to perform at one of its concerts.

The idea of a junior section had been talked about for some time and this taste of what a children’s troupe may look like prompted the amateur actors to volunteer their time to train and nurture talented youngsters.

Jen Fisher, one of WBLETS’s founders, said: “Our ethos has always been to give children the opportunity to improve through performing.

“Everyone gets a chance. We do not hold auditions to become a member. You do not need to have had singing, dancing, acting experience – you just need enthusiasm and a wish to perform.

“We do hold auditions for principal parts within our shows and concerts. This ensures that children get experience of audition and a chance to show what they can do when they feel ready.

“Our members work together in a large age range, sometimes all together and sometimes in smaller age-related groups. Younger children look up to the older ones and the older ones help and care for the younger, less experienced members. This creates a very friendly, inclusive environment.”

Since 2002, WBLETS has mixed full-scale productions with concerts, giving every member the opportunity to perform. This has allowed its 40 members, aged between six and 17, to grow in confidence and experience.

This foray into performing arts inspired several to study drama at university and explore the possibility of a stage career.

“Some of our original WBLETS are now in their early 20s and have gone on to university, with some studying drama, music, singing, teaching, and some continue to perform,” added Jen.

“Others have joined WBLOS either for musicals or panto. WBLETS members also work with other local groups.

“Some are ready to take their next steps and will head to university in the next year.

“It has always been a pleasure to watch our WBLETS grow – we invest a lot of time in them and the end result is worth it. We hope they agree.”

WBLETS meets each Thursday night between 6pm and 7.30pm at the Memorial Hall. To join email wblets@wblos.org.uk or visit wblos.org.uk/main/wblets.html
