LITTLE ones will get their fill of off-the-wall adventures and laughs this weekend in David Walliams's zany show Gangsta Granny.

The plot may seem a tad far-fetched - you don't hear of nannas and their grandsons attempting daring jewellery heists every day - but the story was greatly inspired by Walliams’s own exceptional grandmas.

Sitting captivated at the knees of his two grandmothers as they span tales of their lives, as a youngster the comedian was amazed at how dramatic and exciting their experiences of World War II had been.

In 2011, he penned Gangsta Granny, which remains his most successful novel to date and has now been adapted for the stage.

The new production, which runs at the Wyvern until tomorrow night, follows young Ben, who is forced to spend every Friday night with his gran while his parents go ballroom dancing – and it’s always an ordeal of cabbage soup and Scrabble.

Then, one day, he finds a tin filled with diamonds and gems which leads to the amazing discovery that his granny was once an international jewel thief. Persuaded by Ben, they decide to take on the biggest heist ever and steal the Crown Jewels.
