Gary Delaney believed he had put all his power point days behind him when he ditched his 'proper job' as a conference organiser to become a comedian.

But now the king of the one-liners, who likes to pack as many jokes into his set as possible, has brought them back.

"I like loads of jokes that make people laugh but I needed to break it up a bit, jokes are wordy so I introduced a few pictures into the package,'' he said. "Tim Vine has his silly songs to break it up, Jimmy Carr talks to his audience and I have power points.''

When he comes to Swindon's Arts Centre, Gary will have 200 quirk-fire quips to unleash. He also enjoys delving into the dark side of comedy and his blue bon mots may offend some people.

Old style comedy may suit Gary's delivery but he is not afraid of embracing the modern social media movement, and has more than 60,000 followers on Twitter, which is the perfect medium for such a gag-meister.

"When I first used Twitter I lost my best joke, because with all the retweets etc I had to drop it from my live act. So, I flipped it round and used Twitter to market my shows and get my name known,'' he said.

The comedian's big break came when he appeared on BBC 2's Mock The Week, and he has been a regular guest ever since, but he says that television is a tough call compared to the euphoria of a stage appearance,

He admits that he really has to bone up on the news when he gets the call.

"Television is a hard arena, Mock the Week is fun and I am happy to do it, but I am completely exhausted at the end. While, when I come to Swindon, and I have done a few shows there, they are lovely and at the end I feel exuberant and full of beans. If they ask for an encore I feel like a hero all the way home,'' said Gary.

But he admits that convincing parents that comedy is a 'real job' only comes about when you appear on telly.

He is married to fellow comedian Sarah Millican and they have a Schnoodle dog called Little Commander Tuvok, named after the character in the Star Trek Voyager series.

Commander Tuvok is no stranger to the Green Room, as he travels with Gary, when Sarah is working away.

"That's why I have a warm up act, so he can take him out for a walk while I am on stage,'' said Gary.

With two comedians under one roof most people expect a total house of fun all the time, but Gary says they are like any other couple, they laugh together and divide up the spoils. "If it is abstract it's mine,'' he said.

The comic was invited to appear in a comedy horror film called Trash House, an independent film produced by his friend Pat, but the comedian is convinced that acting is not his forte.

"I can't act, I can only be myself so I played an idiot security guard and it was good fun. I could do a cameo, or be the comedian in the background.''

Gary, without Commander Tuvok, will be performing at the Arts Centre, Devizes Road in Old Town on Sunday, February 5 from 8pm. Tickets are £16.50 from 01793 524481 www.swindontheatres.co.uk - Flicky Harrison
