Swindon's new community theatre is tackling its second production with a gripping drama based in1950s London and the Australian outback of the future.

This ambitious adaptation is performed by The Shoebox Theatre Company led by Luke Marquez, the Artistic Director of Wrong Shoes Theatre Company and the Shoebox Theatre.

The community theatre is aimed at adults seeking to turn professional or those wishing to develop their acting skills to a higher standard, or to help budding actors gain entry to drama schools. The idea is similar to the old repertory theatres which would encourage new talent to hone their skills in a professional theatre environment.

Luke said: "Play selection, rehearsals and casting is undertaken with this in mind, so each actor can develop at a pace that suits them.''

The company are also keen to promote contemporary writing and their first step into Swindon's theatre scene was with The Wonderful World of Dissocia, which was well received.

The latest drama is When The Rain Stops Falling, an award winning play, written in 2008 by Andrew Bovell. It is a strong and emotional play that is suitable for over 14 years.

Starring in the play are David Thompson as Gabriel York, Catherine Halder as Elizabeth Law and Levi Childs as Gabrielle York.

The action is set around seven people who have to face the secrets of their past to be able to embrace the future. It has all the ingredients of a gripping mystery including betrayal, love and abandonment.

The company chose When The Rain Stops Falling after seeing another play by Andrew Bovell, Things I Know To Be True, in Oxford.

“The play was performed by Frantic Assembly, a well-known and respected physical theatre company, so it was beautifully performed, but what really stood out for us was the writing. As soon as we got home we researched what else Bovell had written. When the Rain Stops Falling was exactly what we were looking for and we cannot wait to bring this beautiful, yet challenging story to audiences of Swindon,” said Luke

The drama will be performed at the Shoebox Theatre, Theatre Square from Wednesday, July 5 to Saturday, July 8 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 from www.shoeboxtheatre.org.uk/shoeboxcompany - Flicky Harrison
