ANY amateur group planning on staging a production of Little Shop of Horrors has to put a lot of thought into the star of the show – the giant plant.

And theatre–goers won’t be disappointed by the effort new company, A Chocolate Theatre Society, have put into securing an impressive Audrey II, who grows throughout the show.

If you’ve seen the film it is basically the same storyline, although instead of getting to live somewhere green, Audrey and Seymour become something green.

Vocally the cast were all fantastic. Apart from a little wobble here and there they hit every note and belted out the numbers.

Neil Parsons was absolutely wonderful as Seymour. He embodied the role perfectly and the audience fell in love with him from the moment he walked onto the stage.

Michaela Kearns threw herself into the role of Audrey and her rendition of Somewhere That’s Green was touching.

Josie Malone was fabulous as Ronnette – bags of attitude, great onstage charisma and a fantastic voice.

Sue Marett and Cathy Stevens made up the rebellious trio who hang around Skid Row, and have powerful voices. All they needed was a touch more attitude and sass and their group would have stolen the show.

To my mind, Audrey II should be the star of the show and she/he/it (however you’d like to refer to the blood-drinking alien) is to an extent... but she wasn’t animated enough for me.

I have no doubt that the largest of the models (pictured) is incredibly cumbersome to move but it felt as if the timing for the speech and singing was off occasionally, something I suspect was purely down to the fact they’d only had the plant since Monday and could have done with more time to get used to handling it.

However, I’m convinced it will get better every night, and by tomorrow the man behind the greenery, Dan Donachy, will have mastered it.

This is a fun show that had my theatre buddy and I tapping our toes and singing along. Just remember...whatever you do, don’t feed the plant.
