A DRIVER had to be taken to hospital with head and spinal injuries after losing control of his van on the M4.

The 20-year-old London man's Mercedes Sprinter left the carriageway and mounted an embankment in the crash between Membury Services and junction 15 at Swindon East.

It eventually came to rest facing the wrong direction in lane two of the motorway.

Traffic police closed two lanes of the carriageway for four hours following the crash, which happened just after 5am today (SAT).

The driver was taken to the Great Western Hospital.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who saw the crash or the van being driven leading up to it.
