A petrol station on one of the main roads in Swindon is due to re-open before the end of the year - two years after it closed down.

BP will be re-launching the site off Cricklade Road in November.

It closed because of lack of custom.

Now MPs, councillors and residents are fully in favour of the latest move, saying it will provide a much-needed service to the community.

North Swindon MP Michael Wills said: "I'm very pleased this is going ahead.

"Constituents have made their feelings known to me about this issue so they should be delighted by the outcome." Coun Paul Baker (Lab, Penhill) said: "There's nowhere for local people to go for their petrol so this is definitely a good thing.

"The nearest place is probably Asda in north Swindon. It's really good news for the people of Penhill.

"It will benefit the people in and around the area."

Andrew McCree, the real estate project manager for the company, said: "BP are currently progressing a scheme to re-open our petrol station in Penhill and subject to regulatory approval we hope to open in November."

A BP spokeswoman said: "We are pleased to announce the site in Penhill will be re-opening.

"It will be on the same site with no expansion and the same number of pumps.

"The performance will be under review and we hope residents will support it."

BP is not revealing the cost of the redevelopment.

Another BP garage and a Little Chef food café at Turnpike, on the A419, were both shut in October last year to make way for work on the Blunsdon bypass, which is scheduled to be completed next year.
