A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD has lost his fight for life after being hit by a car.

The youngster was rushed to the Great Western Hospital after a driver lost control and hit a lamppost in a rush-hour accident on Friday evening. But the boy tragically later died from his injuries at the hospital.

The boy, from the Swindon area, was walking in Drove Road in Old Town with his mother at the time of the accident at 5.45pm. Medical staff battled to save him late into the night, but police confirmed this morning he had passed away.

PC Andrew Stanley of the Northern Roads Policing Unit said:"A fatal road traffic accident happened on the B4289 Drove Road, 20 metres north from the junction of Belle Vue Road.

"The driver of a green Peugeot 306 travelling north along Drove Road lost control while negotiating a slight right-hand bend and mounted a nearside curb and collided with a lamppost and pedestrian.

"As a result of the collision the pedestrian was taken to the Great Western Hospital, but due to the severity of their injuries they unfortunately died in hospital."

Swindon police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen accident to contact Sgt Warren Knight or PC Andrew Stanley on 0845 408 7000.
