A DISABLED pensioner says she is putting her life at risk because of ongoing road works.

Sheila Allaway, 77, of Toothill, travels on her disability scooter every week to her hairdresser's in Birch Street.

But her journey is being made increasingly hazardous by road works on Penzance Drive.

Blocked pavements often mean that Mrs Allaway is forced to drive her scooter into the road, where visibility is very bad.

"I'm really getting fed up of it now," said Mrs Allaway. "There's supposed to be somebody there to help you but there never is.

"It really worries me. I don't sleep well the night before I have to go there.

"It's a dangerous spot because there are always lots of cars parked around the garage so it's hard to see very well. I do go very slowly but my heart is in my mouth every time.

"Then very often I can't get up on the pavement so I have to go round the road works in the middle of the road and up onto the pavement on the other side.

"But I'm in the road for quite a long time like that and it really does worry me."

In April the Adver reported what happened to Mrs Allaway when she tried to take the bus to avoid the road works.

The pensioner, who finds walking difficult, got off the bus at Dean Street to make the final part of her journey on foot.

But a strong gust of wind knocked her off balance and led to her falling into the road, in front of an oncoming car.

Luckily the car stopped and the driver and a passer-by helped her to her feet.

Mrs Allaway said: "Luckily it was mainly my pride that was hurt but it did shake me up.

"If it hadn't been for the works on Penzance Drive I wouldn't have been in that position."

Mrs Allaway says she supports the Adver's Get It Sorted initiative, and hopes it helps resolve problems similar to the ones she is experiencing with road works.

A council spokesman said that Coun Mary Martin (Con, Toothill and Westlea) had spoken to Mrs Allaway and as far as they were concerned the matter had been resolved.

He said that any workers on Penzance Drive would be instructed to help Mrs Allaway across the road if they saw that she was in difficulty.
