ABOUT 100 pieces of costume jewellery thought to have been stolen in a series of burglaries has been found in a homeless man’s office block squat.

Police raided Aspen House, the former Swindon Council Register office in the town centre, after arresting a homeless man on New Year’s Eve on suspicion of a burglary in Rolleston Street and found the haul of trinkets, which are not thought to have significant value.

Detectives are now hoping to reunite people with the suspected stolen goods and are also hoping to discover where the items were taken from, as no recent burglary reports match the items.

The haul includes brooches, rings, lockets, earrings and a broken hand mirror.

In the squat police also found rudimentary bedding and food during the search on January 18.

The man arrested for burglary has not been identified but is understood to have been of no fixed address.

Detective Constable Lisa O’Donoghue, of the Priority Crime Team at Gablecross Police Station, said there could be more victims of burglary who have not reported the items missing.

She said: “We searched Aspen House and found a little office where it looked like someone had taken camp. “It was there that jewellery related to the Rolleston Street burglary was recovered along with lots of other costume jewellery, which we believe was stolen but not from that address.

“It looks like it might be stuff that has sentimental value to people, brooches, lockets and clocks.

“We think it is unlikely to have all been taken from one burglary, so it may be there have been several where people have not reported it or an oversight by a victim who has not noted specific items.

“We would like anyone who can help with our inquiries to contact us.”
