A NEW telephone service for the elderly is being introduced to Swindon by Age UK Wilt-shire.

Call in Time will allow an elderly person to receive a half an hour phone call once a week from a trained volunteer.

The idea of the call is to give that person a friendly and regular voice to chat to about any subject they wish, so as to prevent them from feeling alone.

The scheme is being run by the charity in conjunction with Swindon Council and the Zurich Community Trust.

“Reducing loneliness and isolation among older people in our community is central to our work,” said Brian Deeley, the chief executive at Age UK Wiltshire.

“We know that these calls can have a positive impact on people’s lives.”

Among the volunteers is Coun Brian Mattock, deputy leader and cabinet member for health and adult social care.

He said: “This is an exciting initiative which could provide a real lifeline for people.

“The population of older people is growing and this national trend applies particularly in Swindon, so isolation and loneliness are serious issues.

“Often little things, like a regular phone call and an opportunity to talk, can bring huge benefits.

“I’m looking forward to getting involved and encourage anyone who thinks weekly phone calls would help them, to get in touch.”

The charity is keen to highlight the benefits that can be gained not only from receiving the call but also from volunteering.

Rachael Bell, a housing lettings officer at Swindon Council, is also a volunteer.

She said: “I think it’s a great idea. In my job I encounter older people and know how lonely it can be.

“Sometimes they say I’m the only person they’ve got to talk to all week.

“I’m more than happy to give around half an hour a week, which isn’t really much. It will be nice to think I’ve helped cheer someone up.

“My nan lived in sheltered housing and had an arrangement with a neighbour downstairs to ring each other to see how they were and have a little chat.

“This scheme is offering just that to people who may not have anyone to do this.”
