GETTING lost is probably one of the biggest irritations on summer outings – but it could prove to be a lot of fun at a new maize maze.

The family-run maze is growing in a field in Braydon and is expected to be ready by the start of August if the weather holds out.

The maze was the idea of Julio Wideboer and daughter Sian, who spent hours hunting around similar mazes when she was younger, and they wanted to make the most of a field that was not being used at Braydon Manor.

The pair had planned to open the maze last year, but due to the bad weather the crop failed to grow, so Sian has her fingers crossed that the weather stays fine this summer.

The crop was planted in May and on Saturday it had grown enough for the maze design to be cut into it using google earth and guide posts.

And although it is currently only knee-high, it is expected to have passed the six-foot mark by next month.

Sian, 32, said: “We did try to do this last year but with the bad weather it was not possible, so we are trying again this year and so far it is going well.

“We have been on this farm for 30 years and have three generations living here. “The field was not being used so we decided to do something with it.

“When I was younger I used to love it when we used to go to the Maize Maze and get lost.

“We are hoping to open on either the first or second week in August and it will be great to have children here finding their way around the maze.

“We will also have a picnic area and plan to have more attractions to make it a good family day out.”

Wandering through the maze, Sian is hoping to have sculptures around a few of the corners to add excitement to the puzzle before explorers get into the magic middle.

They already have Pavenhill Sculptors set to display some of their work and are asking for more local sculptors to get in contact if they would like to show some of their work, and have the opportunity to sell their imaginative designs to the maze’s visitors.
