“BEAUTIFUL setting, beautiful people,” says Paul Weller gazing at the sublime surroundings as the sun begins to sink over the glory that is Westonbirt Arboretum.
Time – to borrow the title of one of the songs he is about to perform – to wake up the nation; or at least the thousands of fans basking in the lazy Saturday evening sunlight.
Considering the venue, Sunflower seems an appropriate opener. Later he performs the evergreen Wild Wood, perhaps with a nod to Westonbirt’s Silk Wood.
There have been occasions when Weller has steered clear of his illustrious back catalogue but these days he cheerfully plucks gems from earlier eras while performing highlights from a rich, constantly evolving 20 year solo career.
We are treated to The Jam’s That’s Entertainment, a graphic slice of everyday working class life as Weller is assisted by several thousand additional backing singers.
A rousing Town Called Malice sends us happily off into the darkness, attempting to locate absent cabs while re-living in our heads a truly thrilling performance.
