A primary school is looking to expand to cope with the increasing numbers of children coming through its doors every year.

Even Swindon Primary School is adding an extra class every year through the new intakes, and has lodged a planning request with Swindon Council to develop the site to accommodate the additional children.

If granted, the school will build an extra six classrooms, two football pitches and a new school hall, and also expand the playground area.

But officials say if numbers continue to increase there is no further room for expansion.

Work is currently underway to extend the current buildings to house next year’s intake, and phase two of building will be needed for the children of 2014.

Headteacher Alison Lowe said: “The school is growing by a class a year, so we had 90 children in 2012 when usually we had an intake of about 60 prior to that.

“We had the space to accomodate all of them but from this September we are extending the classrooms to hold the new Year 1 children.

“Numbers are expected to grow for the next few years so the school will continue to expand in that way. For the following September we will be full to capacity, which is why we have applied to extend the school further. It will then have a three form entry capacity, allowing us to take on three classes of 30 children every year.

“In order to accommodate the increasing numbers we are looking to have six new classrooms built, along with a new hall, which we will be able to be hire out for community use.

“Because we have got more children we need more playground space, so we are increasing the playground and adding two all-weather football pitches, which can also be used for community hire.

“But the pitches will not have floodlighting because they will be so close to neighbouring houses.

“There will not be space for any further expansion. After this there will be 630 children altogether, not including the separate nursery of 52.

“We are hoping to get started for September 2014 because the work we are having done now will accommodate next year’s intake but not the year after that. We are lucky we have got a very large field we can use to expand into.

“The need is because of the expansion in the local community, so it is very much to serve the needs of local families and their children.”
