WORK on the new £15m Morrisons in east Swindon has started with the building’s main framework now in place.

The metal structure, which make up the skeleton of the new superstore in Eldene, in Dorcan Way has been built.

Small cranes have been stopped making their way around the site which lies on the edge of Eldene.

The development is taking place on the ground adjacent to the current gym and immediately to the north of the Co-op supermarket at the Eldene Centre.

Last December Swindon Council granted planning permission to allow the supermarket chain to build a 25,000sq ft shop, with 250 car parking spaces, on the former site of Dorcan House.

The store is expected to bring around 250 jobs as well as the arrival of three smaller independent shops.

Coun Neil Heavens (Lab, Liden, Eldene and Park South) said: “I think it’s going to give the area a really good boost and it is something to be welcomed.”

A Morrisons spokesman said: “Work has started on the site and we are on track to welcome shoppers into our new store early in the new year.”
