SHOPPERS were treated to a huge range of fresh produce and home-made goods yesterday as a traditional farmers’ market returned to the town centre.

It was the first day of a new weekly farmers’ market which will be located in Havelock Square and take place every Thursday.

There was fruit and vegetables, cheeses and breads and even cupcakes made the day for those who wanted quality and reasonable prices Despite the cloudy weather, people flocked to the market to see what was on offer and many were over the moon with what they found.

“I was absolutely delighted when I found out this was a weekly market,” said Carol Whelan, 66.

“I thought this might be a one-off event so I was really happy to hear it will be happening so regularly.

“I live in Calne and normally go to Salisbury for my shop but I will come to Swindon far more often now.

“A market with fresh products is such a good thing and I think every town should have one.”

Eric Hayes, of Lydiard Millicent, was looking around the stalls and was pleased with what he saw.

He said: “I have only seen some of what is on offer but so far I think it looks really good.

“Anything which increases sales in the town and boosts trade has got to be a positive thing.”

The market is being run by Fresh ‘N’ Local, a company which organises markets across the region.

Kardien Gerbrands, organiser of the market, said he was pleased with the enthusiasm shown by the people of Swindon.

He said: “A lot of people have shown a real interest and have been keen to come and find out what there is on offer.

“Havelock Square is a great location to hold the market and with the high quality stallholders I think it can only get better.

“The traders were really happy to be welcomed by the shoppers so I’m pleased with how everything has turned out today.

“I have a few more stalls lined up to take part in the market who will be in place by the end of October.”

Among the traders were Hinton Marsh Farm, selling a variety of beef, pork, lamb and chicken and cooking up sausages, burgers and bacon on a barbecue.

Making its debut on the market was Mrs Allison’s Bakery, which specialises in cupcakes.

Running her first ever stall, owner Rebecca Allison said: “It has been an absolutely brilliant experience and I have met some wonderful people.

“The feedback from people has been great and it has been very well organised.”

The market will run every Thursday from 9am to 3pm.

and will be certified by the Farm and Retail Markets Association as a genuine farmers’ market.
