THE pedestrian who was killed after being hit by a car on Great Western Way on Saturday morning has been identified as Bryan Robert Sutton.

Mr Sutton, 53, from the Swindon area, had been walking across the carriageway in the early hours of Saturday morning close to a pedestrian walkway between the North Star roundabout and Bruce Street Bridges.

At approximately 2am, Mr Sutton was hit by a black Vauxhall Corsa travelling west along Great Western Way.

Mr Sutton sustained serious multiple injuries as a result of the collision.

Police officers and ambulance staff attended and provided medical treatment, but despite their best efforts he died at the scene.

The driver of the Vauxhall Corsa, a 17-year-old man also from the Swindon area, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Great Western Hospital for treatment.

He has undergone surgery to his hand and is now recovering.

A spokesman for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: “We received the call at exactly 2am on Saturday 9 November.

“We attended the scene with a rapid response vehicle, a full ambulance, and an officer also went to the scene.

“The first vehicle arrived at the scene within four minutes at 2.04pm. Despite the efforts of paramedics, the pedestrian passed away at the scene.

“The driver of the vehicle was then taken to Great Western Hospital having suffered minor injuries in the collision.”

PC Dave Cooper, of the serious collison investigation team at Wiltshire Police, said: “The incident occurred at the underpass between the North Star roundabout heading towards Bridge Street where the road goes over a pedestrian walkway where the old gasometer used to be.

“Mr Sutton was walking on the carriageway as opposed to using the underpass, where he has collided with the car.

“We are not able to provide any further information surrounding this incident, as investigations are still being made.”

Officers at Wiltshire Police are appealing to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw a Vauxhall Corsa in the vicinity of Great Western Way around the time of the collision.

They would also like to speak to anyone who saw Mr Sutton walking in the town centre prior to the collision.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC David Williams of the Serious Collision Investigation Team at Police Headquarters via 101, or alternatively on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously.
