LAST year Top Drawer helped more than 115 families on the council voucher and the emergency assistance schemes.

The charity relies on generous donations from members of the public, and they regularly stock sofas, chairs, tables, wardrobes, coffee tables, chests of drawers, cookers, coffee tables and cookers.

They are most desperate for donations of beds, which are always in short supply.

Top Drawer operates out of a shop and the former church hall in Sussex Square, which is currently packed full of furniture.

Although working primarily to support the town’s most needy, the shop also welcomes customers from low-income individuals and families and the wider general public.

If I could just insert some caution - years ago I accepted a bed from a friend which unfortunately housed some bed bugs. It took months of discomfort, many hundreds of pounds spent on pest control and the eventual disposal of ALL of our bedroom furniture before we could sleep safely at night.
