CHARITY SkillForce took a group of children from Swindon Academy to RAF Brize Norton where they learnt about the Hercules planes based there.

The trip, which took place on March 26, saw 11 pupils and two teachers from the school meet servicemen from the 24 Squadron, homed at the base, and learn about their duties.

The students went on a flight simulator, took part in training exercises, visited the air control tower and had a briefing from Flight Sergeant Ozzy Hicks.

Teacher Helen Rebello said: “The visit to Brize Norton was a fabulous opportunity for the students. Flying the simulator and seeing the air traffic control at work demonstrated engineering and technology in action. The emergency drills proved to several pupils that they could cope with a pressurised situation and overcome their fears.’’ SkillForce works with ex-servicemen to help inspire Wiltshire children to achieve as much as they can in their lives.

Will Mortimer, SkillForce instructor, said: “The students were given an understanding of what the forces experience on a daily basis which tested their ability to react under pressure and work as a team. Learning by doing is the core to what our charity is about. I am hugely grateful to the 24 Squadron.”
