EMMA DUNN meets up with a very friendly group of artists...

ARTISTS of all abilities can draw, paint and get crafty with Haydon Artists Society.

The society, which started with just five members more than 10 years ago, now has more than 60 artists aged from 15 to 86.

They meet in North Swindon Library every Thursday from 7pm to 9pm, and there is also a Tuesday group which meets at Haydon Wick Parish Council Offices on Tuesdays from 10am to noon.

Barbara Moody, one of the founders of the group, said: “We take anybody and everybody – all they need is an interest in art.

“It doesn’t have to be painting, we have people who come in and do craft work too.”

Members work on their own art and are free to do what they want.

The society has an exhibition once a year and they also go on outings to see exhibitions and galleries.

“We have a huge age range but everyone gets on really well together,” said Barbara.

“It’s a very happy place to be. During the meetings we just sit and paint or do whatever artwork we want. There is no tutor and you don’t have to produce anything to be allowed to join. If you come, you’re good enough.”

Barbara said the group was popular because art can sometimes be a lonely hobby.

“Lots of people have said they used to enjoy doing art and painting at school but then when they left school they didn’t and they want to get back into it,” she said.

“Quite experienced artists say painting is a very lonely thing to do. You sit there and there is nobody else, which can make you feel like giving up.

“Being in a group like Haydon Artists Society gives you that push to get on and do things. You can talk to people who enjoy the same kind of thing you do.

“Lots of talking goes on, particularly at the Thursday group.”

People who join the group bring their own materials. The society has a library of books and DVDs people can use for inspiration.

  • Membership for the Thursday group is £6 a month. The Tuesday group is £5.50 a month. If you want to join, you are welcome to visit the Thursday group for more information.
