DJ Tom Humber will finally be laid to rest with the dignity he deserves after his friends and big names of Swindon’s music scene came together to raise £800 towards a headstone, a year after his sudden passing.
The former Swindon 105.5 radio presenter, known as Tom ‘Himself’ Humber, died from a heart attack on June 14, 2013 at the age of 32.
His father passed away the following January before he had a chance to choose a headstone for his son, who is buried at Kingsdown Cemetery.
To remedy the situation and pay homage to their friend on the first anniversary of his passing, Darren Whiting, better known as DJ Dust, musicians and local bands organised a tribute club night at the re-launched Level 3 on Commercial Road on Saturday.
The event – one of two planned to raise the £500 needed – attracted an impressive £800 worth of donations in just a few hours.
Darren, who performed his and Tom’s Nightshift act on the night, said: “We raised £800 which is rather phenomenal. It’s quite touching.
“A year ago we pledged to do something to remember him and the idea of raising money for a headstone came later when his dad passed away.
“It was a moving night and there were well over 100 people there. They had a banner in the club that everybody signed and there were photos of Tom all around the club.”
The 41-year-old added: “Tom had a lot of friends. He was not your typical idea of a DJ; he was content to sit in the background.”
A second club night in memory of Tom, who was a heavy metal enthusiast, will be staged at the Vic in Old Town tomorrow. All extra funds collected will be donated to charity in Tom’s name.
Tom, of Wichelstowe, joined community radio station Swindon 105.5 in 2008, just a few months after its inception. There he was trained by founder Shirley Ludford before heading the Late Shift Rock Show.
He remained at the station for three years before leaving to pursue web broadcasting and DJing.
Tomorrow’s gig at The Vic will feature live music from In The Absence Of Light, Eye For An Eye and a Nightshift club tribute.
