THE Kentwood Jazz Choir took the regular Baker Street Jazz Club by storm this week.

Fifteen vocalists led by Sheila Harrod entertained the packed audience with a mix of jazz and song book standards.

The programme was a balance of full choir, small group and soloists.

Jazz fan Keith Brain, of Upham Road, was in the audience.

He said: “All the individuals of the choir contributed so much in vivacity, style and voicing that a great atmosphere was created in best showbiz fashion.

“A special mention though of long-standing choir member Cathy Hobson, whose second solo feature I Get A Kick Out Of You hit the spot.”

The newly formed Kentwood unit was backed by a quartet led by maestro Paul Maguire on keyboard. Trombonist Ian Bateman closed the first set with a quartet version of Autumn In New York. Chris Frencome was on bass guitar after travelling in from Chippenham and Andy Griffiths on drums. “To me, the highlights were the attack and fresh appeal the ensemble brought to their material. It’s no surprise the new jazz choir has already picked up a provisional booking for Rosa Matheson’s Nepalese Orphans charity in Highworth.”

The Baker Street Jazz Club takes place every Tuesday from 8pm. Admission is free.
