West End Queen’s at home

Swindon Advertiser: Sarah Covey performing as the Killer Queen in We Will Rock You in the West End Sarah Covey performing as the Killer Queen in We Will Rock You in the West End

WEST End star Sarah Covey is returning to her Swindon roots on Sunday to star in a production celebrating a decade of work by the Janice Thompson Performance Trust.

Sarah, who has just brought a three-year spell in We Will Rock You, the show inspired by the band Queen, to end, will be performing songs from the musical. During her time with the Ben Elton show Sarah performed as part of the ensemble and as the Killer Queen understudy.

The former New College pupil will be joined at the Wyvern Theatre for the show, which starts at 7.30pm, by past and present JTPTrust members including Polly Leach, Caroline Lock, David Philips, Jordan Ginger who will perform in segments of the production organised by director Janice Thompson.

The audience will see scenes from Swindon the Opera and Brunel: The Little Man in the Tall Hat.

Sarah, who trained at the Royal Academy of Music, said: “It feels like I’m coming full circle being back in Swindon performing at the Wyvern Theatre. I’m delighted to take part as I owe Janice so much and I probably wouldn’t have got into We Will Rock You if it wasn’t for her support.

“The trust is one of the bigger groups of its type in Swindon and does a lot to support the community. It is going to be really nice having lots of my family and friends from Swindon in the crowd.”

Sarah, who lives in Surrey, was part of the cast which brought the iconic Queen-based show’s 12-year stay on the West End to a close last month and now she is looking forward to her next career step.

She said: “The last couple of shows were absolutely incredible, we had Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen perform in the last two shows. It was absolutely amazing and the audiences were just the most incredible of my three years with We Will Rock You.

“I’ve been auditioning and looking positive going forward as there are so many shows and tours about. I’d hope my experience with such an iconic show would put me in a good position.”

Janice has worked for decades with the JTPTrust formed in 2004 to promote, improve, develop and maintain standards of singing in the Swindon area.

Janice said: “I am delighted that the trust has helped so many young and adult singers both locally and professionally.”

Youngsters from Lydiard Park Academy Community Singers, Swindon Young Musicians Youth Choir and Haydonleigh Junior Choir will also perform on Sunday.
