JANE Young’s globally-sourced, technicolour blanket was raffled off in Royal Wootton Bassett last week, raising more than £300 for Help For Heroes.

The 6ft by 8ft crocheted masterpiece was put together after a Facebook plea for ideas on what she should knit following a tough time in 2013, when she suffered two heart attacks.

The blanket was put together with knitted squares sent to the 64-year-old’s Rylands Way home from all four corners of the globe.

Tickets to win the woolly creation have been sold for past few weeks and a winner was finally pulled out of the hat at Emma Rose Furnishings, in Boroughfields, last Wednesday where the blanket has been on display since it was finished at the end of July. “A local lady won it,” said Jane.

“I stopped her before the draw was made asked if she wanted to buy any more tickets before the selection was made, but she said she had one and that was enough.” And so it proved, as her ticket was pulled out by Mayor Teresa Page. Jane said the total raised was £402, but with costs taken off of that for materials and postage costs, the final amount going to the military charity would be £314. “I’m terrifically relieved it’s all over and gone to that lady because she has a relative currently undergoing rehabilitation for an injury suffered while serving in the Forces,” said Jane. The former accountant is now putting together plans for her next big knitting project.
