BOREDOM has kick-started global explorer Peter Jenkins’s charity walk around the Earth six months early, with the UK leg of his fundraiser now pencilled in for early October.

The 53-year-old, who lives in Pathfinder Way, in Redhouse, was due to swap the comfortable surroundings of his new-build property for the great outdoors from April 2015.

Peter, a renewable energy consultant, has already begun the process of winding down his freelance work and served noticed on his intention to vacate his home.

He will begin his three-year march in aid of Cancer Research UK and Unicef at Land’s End and walk to John O’Groats.

From the northern-most tip of Scotland he will go to the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland, followed by Lowestoft Ness, before returning to Swindon.

This first leg will take in 2,200 miles, and as Peter marches on through the winter months into next spring, he will use it to train him to cope with the extreme weather he will face on the longer journey.

“I am bored waiting,” he said. “I have been training for 10 months now and the thought of waiting until May isn’t nice, I’m ready to go now.

“I have just given notice on my flat and one of the companies I was working for, I’m not anymore.

“It all came together and I thought: ‘I’m going to do it.’ “I have also been talking to some people and decided I’m better off doing the UK first. During the time of year you are doing it, it’s going to be hard, but it will set you up for what’s to come.”

The enormous charity project has been named WorldWalk4Aid, and a sizeable target of £2m put up as the inspiration for Peter, who plans to cover 15,500 miles, 28 countries and five continents.

The trip is not free and Peter will need to raise £30,000 to cover emergency medical fees and food before he even starts donating to the two charities.

It is hoped using the UK as a launch pad for his global walk will help to generate the sponsorship needed.

“Talking about this walk is good, but actually going out and doing it is going create a lot more awareness,” said Peter.
