SWINDON’S most battered bridge took its latest hit yesterday afternoon after a transit van got stuck.

Police were called to Whitehouse Bridge at 2.39pm after the white Ford panel van hit it.

A police spokesman said that the bridge had not been severely damaged and Network Rail, which were informed of the incident, had given it the all clear.

A police spokesman said: “At around 2.39pm we received a radio call from one of our officers that a van had become stuck under a bridge in Gorse Hill.

“We inspected the bridge for damage and we called Network Rail, who also inspected the bridge and said there had been no damage.

“Recovery was also called and attended the scene.

“The road was clear by 3.30pm with all traffic moving steadily again.”

It is not the first time the 10ft bridge, dubbed the “most bashed” in the town, has seen a driver come unstuck – it has reportedly claimed more than 150 victims.

This included a publicity stunt in 1996 when a double decker bus was used to highlight its dangers and warn drivers to be more wary.

Already this year at least one other incident occurred under the bridge after a horsebox wedged underneath it in March.

In 2013 at least two vehicles became lodged there, despite warning signs being installed on the road before it.
