THE opening of a new play area in East Wichel is being delayed by pesky badgers.

The equipment is all in place and turf has been laid but the latter is being affected by badgers dragging it out of place.

The temporary fencing, around the park in Ferndale Road, isn’t expected to come down until the situation is dealt with.

Swindon Council and the site’s contractor have decided to install solar badger deterrents at the site to stop the animals.

The small boxes, known as Nite Eyes, flash two red lights to mimic predators with the intention of scaring the badgers away.

The boxes will be mounted on posts around the park and it is hoped that the park will be ready to open on Friday if no further damage is recorded.

Councillor Nadine Watts (Lab, Old Town and East Wichel) said: “The East Wichel play area has been something I have been pushing for ever since I was elected as a councillor for East Wichel, so I’m pleased we’re so close to opening.

“These delays are very frustrating but the problems with the badgers could not have been foreseen. Hopefully these deterrents will work and give time for the turf to knit together. It will be a fantastic play area for local children.

“I would like to thank everybody who has played a role in finally getting this play area delivered.”

It is expected that the Nite Eyes will be in place for around two weeks which will allow the turf to set. The progress will be assessed on a daily basis.

The park homes a sand pit, climbing fence and basketball area.

Coun Watts said: “Some families have been here for five years now and I really hope we can get the play area open as soon as possible. I know this delay is frustrating but I want everyone to know that we are doing all we can to get the play area open as soon as possible.”

An official opening of the new play area is expected to take place during the October half-term holidays.
