CAROLLING with a twist, penguins and mulled wine all helped get John Lewis at Home’s shoppers in the festive spirit at the weekend.

The department store, at Mannington Retail Park, held its Christmas Countdown Event with the star of the show being Monty the penguin, who features in John Lewiss’ new seasonal TV advert.

Hundreds of people got selfies with the penguin, who was in Santa’s sleigh. There was also children’s storytelling at Monty’s Den.

Sector manager Phoenix Stewart said: “It has been a really busy time but we are just delighted to be able to create a festive atmosphere for our customers.

“There’s no hard sell or anything like that we just want to get into the spirit of things. For us, it is purely about the experience for our customers.

“Monty has been so popular with staff and customers. We have lots of shoppers who come in and speak to us about our Christmas adverts and they’re always surprised that we manage to bring out better ones year after year.

“The next couple of weeks are going to be so exciting for us. We expect the store to be packed which is great as we thrive in that situation. The energy we have is amazing and we’ve had 20 temps to help us cope with the increased custom.”

Highlights of the event saw mulled wine and mince pies being served, while singer Chloe Hepburn impressed the crowds with renditions of Your Song and Somewhere Only We Know.

Swindon Dance’s new urban influence troupe also performed on both days. They initially started as carol singers before doing a variety of dance routines.

Lizzie Bond, the group’s development and communications manager, said: “It has been really good for us to work with John Lewis and have this opportunity to showcase our great talents. It helps to promote them and the good work of Swindon Dance.”

The new group will be performing at the town centre Christmas lights switch-on taking place in Wharf Green from 6.30pm on Thursday.

Pudsey the dog and owner Ashleigh will have the honour of turning on the lights.

Other attractions on the night will include a fireworks display and an appearance by actor Nigel Haver,s who is appearing in the Dick Whittington panto at the Wyvern Theatre.
