Wootton Bassett Road at Mannington has reopened after a lorry crashed into the railway bridge, just one month after a furniture lorry met the same fate.

The Sparks Transport Lorry collided with the bridge just before nine in what is an accident blackspot for heavy goods vehicles. The driver was unhurt in the incident.

A Network Rail spokesperson, said: “At approximately 9am this morning, a lorry struck the railway bridge on Wootton Bassett Road in Swindon.

"A team of engineers was immediately despatched to site to undertake a safety inspection, which concluded that the collision had resulted in minor surface damage that did not affect the safety of the bridge.

"Six passenger trains were affected while this inspection took place.

"By 10.45am the lorry had been removed and normal services had resumed.”

The vehicle was winched out by another lorry and the driver has been cautioned and reported for careless driving.

Wiltshire Police said earlier: “Police were called at 8.51am this morning to reports of a lorry stuck under a bridge. The lorry was a heavy duty, green Scania articulated lorry.

"The recovery process is still ongoing with the road expected to be opened again later on.

"It looks likely that the lorry will still be driveable but it is a case of the driver getting in and seeing if he can reverse out of there.”

First Great Western had tweeted: "Due to a vehicle striking a bridge between Bristol Parkway & Swindon, services on this route may be amended or delayed by up to 30mins."

On the evening  of Friday, January 9, a lorry was trapped for hours under the bridge - one of many incidents over the years.
