A MAN is in a serious condition after a serious assault left him lying in a Swindon street.

The victim, a 21-year-old man, was the victim of an attack at just before 10pm last night in Kingswood Avenue, Park North.

Police said today he had been taken to Bristol’s Southmead Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The incident unfolded outside the Milverton Court tower block, with witnesses saying they believe the man had been attacked with what appeared to be a screwdriver.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, described how her partner witnessed the attack.

“My partner said he saw something shiny,” she said.

She said she thought an argument involving the victim and two other men had taken place outside the block, with residents hearing shouting.

Another resident of Milverton Court was returning home from visiting a friend when she witnessed the attack and alerted the police.

She said: “There were three men, I heard shouting by the balconies. One of them had what I thought was a screwdriver then two of them ran off.”

She described seeing the victim immediately after the attack.

“He lay down in the middle of the road, got up, sat on the grass and then lay down again,” she said.

“My partner ran down to help him, I threw a towel down from the balcony. He knew to apply pressure to the wounds.

“I immediately rang the police and they were there within five minutes.”

Witnessing the attack has left the woman fearing for her children.

“I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve always felt safe before but now I don’t feel safe, not with my kids here,” she said.

In October last year, a man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm after a stationary vehicle was shot at in nearby Banwell Avenue and the woman said the incidents had scared her.

“With what happened last year when that car was shot at, I feel a bit shaken and scared for my kids.”

A police spokesman said officers were responding to reports of a man lying in the middle of the road.

“The victim, a 21-year-old man, suffered serious injuries as a result of the attack,” he said.

“He was taken by ambulance to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where his condition is currently described as serious but not life threatening.”
