THIS was the first place we ever ate in Bath, when we were on a mini tour of the West Country, long before we knew we would end up living in Wiltshire. And it hasn’t changed because it’s never needed to.

The menu offering is the gourmet burger, with beef, chicken, vege and bean varieties, with a wide variety of hot and spicy, sweet and tasty, ethnic and just plain delicious toppings, extras and sides. You can have a single meat patty, or go for the double, which at an extra £1.30 for most options is usually what we do.

This time round I plumped for the BBQ bacon cheeseburger, £6.75, a double helping of beef topped with bacon, BBQ sauce, cheddar, red onion and lettuce, while my son wanted the Chorizo Burger (£6.85), which features chorizo sausage slices, mature cheddar, mayo, gherkins, red onion and lettuce.

My other favourite is the Garlic Mayo Cheeseburger, and my daughter tells me the Vege Jalapeno Burger is the one to go for if you’re not a meat-eater.

The burgers were cooked to order, promptly in spite of the small shop being popular, and served on freshly toasted and really hot buns. They were delicious: you can have fries with them, and get drinks here, but we always find it too hard to manage extras when you’re grappling with the two-handed approach needed to control such a giant burger while walking through Bath’s crowded and in some places cobbled streets.

We ended up deliciously full, for a very reasonable £13.60.
