UPDATE: The overturned lorry on the M4 this morning was involved in a single-vehicle road traffic collision.

Wiltshire Fire & Rescue gave the incident HASMAT status because of the level of hazardous fuel spilled across the carriageway this morning.

The fire service was away from the scene at 7.24am.

Commuters heading east on the M4 are facing delays between junctions 15, for Swindon East, and junction 14 for Hungerford, after a lorry overturned in the early hours.

The lorry overturned at around 3am, spilling 300 litres of diesel across the carriageway and damaging a safety barrier, the Highways Agency said.

The eastbound carriageway is closed while emergency services deal with the spillage and traffic is queueing for several miles.

The lorry was lifted from its side at 7.15am.

Traffic is being diverted via the A419 north towards Swindon, the B4192 south via Liddington to Hungerford, and A338 north back to the M4, junction 14.

MEANWHILE, sunshine and showers will be the order of the day this morning, according to the Met Office.

A forecaster said: "There will be a mix of sunshine and well scattered light showers this morning.

"It will become dry this afternoon, although cloud will start to increase from the southwest later on. On the cool side."

The maximum temperature would be 13C, he said, before dropping to around 4C overnight.

"Some clear spells are likely in the north and east overnight, especially at first," he said.

Tomorrow morning would see some bright spells, with clouds expected in the south of the county.

Maximum temperature, 14C.
