THEY have trodden every square inch of our region's stunning countryside, but The Ramblers are more than mere walking chums.

Since its inception more than four decades ago, the Swindon and North East Wiltshire Ramblers Group has not only actively championed walking both for health and pleasure but has campaigned to protect our open country and the freedom to roam over uncultivated land.

"The Ramblers, of which we are part, is Britain’s only walking charity dedicated to the promotion of walking and the protection of places that we love to walk; and we seek to maintain those objectives in our local area," said Grahame Lee, chairman of the Swindon and North East Wiltshire Ramblers Group.

"We lead several Ramblers group walks of varying lengths each week and we are also involved in the local Swindon Health Walk Scheme which aims to start people walking short distances and then progressing to longer Ramblers walks. We also have Footpath Working Parties who volunteer to help the local councils to keep footpaths clear and in good repair.

“We closely monitor local planning issues and work with local authorities to ensure that footpaths are protected from development, diversion and closure. And we check that development does not spoil the view, the landscape or the walking environment."

With so many responsibilities and ongoing campaigns, it should come as no surprise that the group counts no fewer than 380 members.

Walkers meet in various locations across town before setting off on their weekly excursions including Pipers Way, Euclid St and Haydon Centre.

There is a short walk every Saturday of around five miles. Sunday ups the antes for members with an amble of eight to 12 miles. Beginners can take part in a five-mile walk on a Tuesday once a month.

Each walk is headed by a trained leader.

"We strongly believe that walking improves and maintains health both physical and mental and the social element also improves the health and wellbeing of the individual, particularly if they are single or widowed," he added. "We offer them the opportunity to get involved in a number of social activities and days out and holidays.

“Friendships form and small groups also arrange their own social activities. Many people have told me that becoming a member of our group has changed their life for the better.

What better reaction does a volunteer like myself need to have?

"People are able to walk with the group on three occasions without cost or obligation before being encouraged to join the Ramblers."

The Ramblers are currently preparing for the Swindon Walking Festival which starts on May 2 at Coate Water.
