FIRST Great Western has said it is having meetings today with Network Rail to discuss arrangements for fans looking to get to Wembley for the play-off final.

The match is taking place on May 24 but due to engineering works that weekend there are currently set to be no trains leaving Swindon station that day, with coaches being used instead.

With up to 10,000 fans potentially wanting to use public transport to get to the game, the rail company has admitted it could cause them a few issues.

A spokesman said: “Firstly we would like to congratulate Swindon on making the play-off final. However, it does pose us a few problems considering the engineering works Network Rail have planned.

“We are working with them to find a way forward. Our priority is to make sure our customers are able to travel and the fans are able to make the game.

“At the moment there is a limited service but we are meeting today to come up with a plan.”

Network Rail say the works have been planned months in advance and the tracks are empty during this period.

A Network Rail spokesperson, said: "The work we undertake over public holidays is planned many months and frequently years in advance.

"Over the late May bank holiday we will be undertaking testing of the new signalling equipment that has been installed at Swindon. This essential testing can only take place when trains aren’t running, and for safety and reliability reasons must occur before the new signalling equipment is brought into use.

"Once in operation this new equipment will help to improve reliability and will pave the way for electrification and the arrival of a new fleet of longer, faster, quieter and greener electric trains.

"We apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused by this work and urge them to check before they travel through National Rail Enquiries or through train operator, First Great Western.”

Elsewhere, the police have said a Sheffield United fan was arrested outside the ground but have not ruled out further arrests following a pitch invasion after the final whistle.

A spokeswoman for Wiltshire Police said: “Overall, the vast majority of supporters were well behaved during Monday night’s game.

“There was just a small minority of people who were intent on spoiling it for others. Only one arrest was made during the evening, a 46-year-old male Sheffield United supporter.

“This arrest did not take place at the ground, however. He was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in a public place. He was taken to Gablecross and dealt with by way of a fixed penalty ticket.

“There was a minor disorder at the end of the game which was triggered by a pitch invasion mainly by Swindon supporters.

“There may be follow up arrests once CCTV has been reviewed.”
