PUPILS at Lawn Primary School will have more opportunities to explore the wildlife around them after volunteers from Nationwide transformed the school's outdoor learning areas.

Fifteen volunteers from the Pipers Way based building society visited the Cleeve Lawn school this week(may20) to build paths and construct a mini beast hotel to entice creatures to settle in their grounds for the children to explore and engage with.

Kelly James, headteacher at Lawn Primary School, said: "Everyone learns better by doing than by watching and many of the children live quite sedentary lives, so we wanted something that would encourage them to get outside to learn rather than sitting in the classroom all day.

"It's also a way of making learning more fun.

"It means when we want to do some more practical learning we don't have to take the children out to Lawn Woods or around town we can just go and explore our own grounds.

"We're very grateful for the help from the volunteers from Nationwide.

"We have also just had our Royal Horticultural Society Level 2 award so it will help us to improve our commitment to the environment too.

"There are so many things the children can learn from the outdoors and so many skills abut the environment and caring for wildlife as well as other practical skills like orienteering and map reading."
