YOUNGSTERS got the chance to satisfy their hunger for knowledge when they were given an insight into how a major fast-food business operates.

Swindon McDonald’s franchisee Carl Room opened the doors of his new restaurant at the Bridgemead Retail Park this week to more than 150 students and staff from schools across the county.

The move was part of the franchise’s tenth annual open day, which was also attended my Swindon Mayor Andrew Bennett.

It aimed to give catering and business studies students practical experience and insight into the running of a successful business.

Carl said: “I open up the restaurant to local schools on an annual basis as I believe that it is not only important to offer them practical work experience to supplement their studies, but also because it gives them an insight into the career opportunities available within McDonald’s."

“I’m very proud of all of the staff and the standard of our operational procedures, and I hope that sharing these practices will be useful in supporting the learning process of all of the students.”

Among the lessons the visitors were able to pick up were educational talks, tours, demonstrations and practical learning tips.

Topics included health and safety, hygiene and food preparation, as well as office procedures. , such as appropriate scheduling and sales projections.

The talks also introduced the pupils to the McDonald’s Apprenticeship programme, a scheme that offers crew the chance to study towards nationally recognised qualifications.

Adding to the occasion, pupils who attended over the lunchtime period were also introduced to the Mayor of Swindon, Andrew Bennett, who was given a guided tour of the restaurant.

Teacher Darren McNulty, from St Joseph’s Catholic College, said: “Visiting a successful local business is a fantastic opportunity for the children to get a taste of working life in an interactive and fast-paced environment."

“The pupils learned a huge amount and really enjoyed immersing themselves in everything the day had to offer.

“Getting first-hand experience is invaluable for them and we’d like to say thank you to Carl and his fantastic team at McDonald’s for providing such a rewarding learning experience.”
