A SOCIAL media campaign has granted one happily-married couple the wedding of their dreams, almost 60 years after they tied the knot.

Tomorrow, Rose and Harry Brookman of George Selman Gardens, Park North, will fulfil a long-held dream when they take their vows in a traditional church wedding in Lydiard Tregoze.

Complete with wedding dress, tiara and veil, handwritten vows and 70 guests, the couple will finally get the white wedding they have always wanted, thanks to generous town residents.

The couple's original nuptials, at a Mordon Register Office on August 18, 1956, fell far short of the dream day they had imagined.

After seeing how much a white wedding would mean to Rose and Harry, granddaughters Victoria, Ellen and Catherine together with the couple’s daughter Beverley posted on popular Facebook group For Sale, Free or Wanted- which boasts 60,000 members - asking for the public’s help with wedding pieces.

They were soon inundated with hundreds of donations from well-wishers including ring cushions, table decorations, bridesmaids dresses, cake, flowers and hand-made invitations, with the perfect day coming together in two months.

Former plasterer Harry, 81, said he was overwhelmed with pride at what his brood had achieved.

“We’re so proud of all of them, what they’ve done for us is just completely overwhelming. I can’t believe the generosity of people in Swindon, it’s incredible,” he said.

“I can’t wait to see her walk down the aisle in a proper dress and veil, I hope I won’t get too emotional but it’s wonderful to finally be having this chance to marry again.”

In a poignant tribute, Rose, who will be walked down the aisle by son Ian, will carry a bouquet adorned with photos of her late father Clarence and brother Barry.

“That way I know they are with me, it’s like my father is walking me down the aisle, like he always wished for,” Rose said.

The couple’s daughter Beverley said planning the wedding blessing had been a full-time job.

“It’s something that has taken over our entire lives, we’ve been staying up until three in the morning but it’s been worth every minute,” she said.

“I think I’ve been Bridezilla in all of this, but the response has been more than we could have wished for. We’re so grateful to people in the community who have helped make my mum and dad so happy,” she said.

True to the party-loving pair, home-made beer will form the centrepiece of the “good old cockney knees-up” evening do before their first dance to Elvis Presley’s Love Me Tender.

Keeping to tradition, the couple will also spend a rare night away from one another on the eve of the wedding blessing.

Rose paid tribute to her partner of 59 years ahead of the vow renewal.

She said: “He is a fantastic man and he has looked after me so well when I’ve been unwell, we’re never apart and it just shows that marriage can be for life.”
