INNOVATIVE automotive technology that could one day be powering the nation’s cars came under the spotlight today as the town’s MPs met with business leaders to see how business can boom in Swindon.

Robert Buckland and Justin Tomlinson learned more about technology created by Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells at a meeting held at the Government’s innovation agency, Innovate UK.

The agency, which has its headquarters in the town, is responsible for determining which scientific and technological developments will drive future growth.

It offers funding to the strongest options, as well as connecting innovators with the contacts to succeed.

The MPs saw first-hand how Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells’ technology can be used to power cars.

Robert said: “What we are looking at is the future but these things take time to develop.

“It is going to be a few years until we see it but it is great to know Johnson Matthey are at the forefront in finding a replacement for fossil fuel power.”

Justin said: “Swindon is very much at the heart of lots of huge, exciting opportunities and it is crucial the UK is at the forefront for long-term growth.”
