A FAMILY fighting to prevent their four-year-old daughter facing a 10-mile round trip to primary school in September have had some good news.

Last month the Advertiser reported that the McGhee family had been allocated a place for their daughter Cailin at Rodbourne Cheney Primary School, five miles from their home in Oakhurst, Priory Vale.

Their first choice school Red Oaks was hugely oversubscribed, and they also missed out on second and third choices of Orchid Vale and Bridlewood primaries because of their popularity.

The McGhees also live within the designated areas for Abbey Meads, Catherine Wayte and Haydonleigh schools but Cailin was allocated a place at another northern sector school where spaces remained because these too were already full.

They were facing an anxious wait as an appeal for a place at Red Oaks was being considered.

Now mum Rebekka says the family have had some relief as they have been offered a place for Cailin at St Mary's primary in Purton.

The school was not listed among the options for the family as it is outside Swindon Council's territory, and is run by Wiltshire County Council.

Mrs McGhee said: "St Mary's School has spaces left. It's only a five-minute drive from our house so we viewed it and applied and Cailin got accepted.

"If our appeal doesn't get accepted at Red Oaks then she'll be going to Purton.

"It seems like a much better option than Rodbourne as it means not having to drive through rush hour traffic every morning."

To get Cailin to Rodbourne Cheney school, Mrs McGhee would have had to tackle around an hour-long commute from home, via Abbey Meads nursery for her younger son, and Cailin's primary before getting to work in the town centre.
