SCARY Swindon got into the spirit of Halloween at the weekend.

As well as the traditional trick or treating, there were numerous spooky goings on to keep families entertained.

On Friday night and again a Saturday a special ghost train was put on at the Swindon and Cricklade Railway.

Youngsters, dressed in a variety of scary costumes, took a ride on the specially running ghost train and then took a visit to the dungeon.

Along the way they bumped into all manner of zombies and other ghouls to add to the frighteningly fun evening for everyone.

Shoppers in the town centre could also get into the spirit of the occasion as a host of activities were launched.

Fans of children’s horror novel series Goosebumps who were at The Brunel Centre on Saturday were able to revisit scenes from their favourite novels and explore the centre’s ghostly goings on.

Areas of the mall covered in decorations based on four of JL Stein’s novels from the famous series; Night of the Living Dummy, Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes, The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight and Vampire Breath.

And for those who were not familiar with the Goosebumps stories there was a storyteller reading extracts from the novels in Waterstone’s.

On top of that, students from New College were on hand to provide face painting for any children who wanted to look extra scary.

Across the town numerous family events were held throughout the day. Among them was a special Halloween Party held in Queens Park.

Live music was provided and there were also lots of games for the youngsters.

Naomi Jacobs, who was there with her seven and four-year-old sons, said: “Community events like this are great. The kids have loved putting the face paint on and are loving it.

“Everyone is really friendly as well. It’s really made Halloween.”

Elsewhere, a Halloween charity event was held for people living in East Wichel on Saturday evening, hosted by two sisters.

Siobhan and Kimney Murray put on the party for free and asked their guests each to donate a toy to the Great Ormond Street Hospital before Christmas.
