THEIR Christmas TV commercial was one of the most hotly-anticipated events of the season when it was unveiled earlier this month, and now Swindon’s John Lewis branch have thrown their backing behind the retailers charitable cause.

The advert, which sees a young girl bring a tear to the eye of a man isolated on the moon by sending him the gift of a telescope for Christmas, was made to promote the national retailer’s partnership with charity Age UK.

Now the Swindon branch, John Lewis At Home at the Mannington Retail Park, has shown its support for a local branch of the charity by donating a hamper filled with Christmas goodies.

Age UK Wiltshire offer support and friendship to isolated older people in their own homes. They match those in need with volunteer visitors and callers who have similar interests and are likely to form a good friendship.

Jayne Funnel, head of services at Age UK Wiltshire, said she was delighted with the hamper which will help raise funds for the local charity. She said: "As part of the federation of AGE UK we would love John Lewis to raise awareness with partners and customers about the isolation and loneliness of older people.”

Veronica Zarola, John Lewis At Home Swindon branch operations assistant said there were even more plans in the pipeline to support the cause. She said: “We will be inviting guests for afternoon tea and entertainment on Friday, December 4th. The charity will also be in the store for the John Lewis December Christmas Launch Weekend on 5th and 6th December to tell customers more about Age UK

“Swindon partners will also be arranging an internal cake bake, Tombola and raffle to raise funds for the charity as well.”
