CHRISTMAS is just one of the many aspects of life that have become more magical since Helen Wing became a foster carer.

The 48-year-old, from Stratton, is supporting Swindon Borough Council’s festive campaign to attract more foster carers and help change children’s lives for the better.

“I’ve always enjoyed Christmas, but it’s extra special now,” says Helen, who has been fostering for two years.

“It has really proved that the greatest joy comes from giving,” she said. “Being a foster carer is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done and I’m sure there are plenty of other people out there who would feel just the same.”

The former senior accounts clerk is single and has no children of her own, but she has always had the urge to help young people. When an opportunity came up to take redundancy as a senior accounts clerk she decided to seize the moment and do something about it.

“I decided to make my dream to care for disadvantaged teenagers a reality and haven’t looked back. It has proved everything I wished for and more. Of course there are new challenges each day, but I’m a positive, determined person so we overcome them together,” she said.

“Compared to my life processing invoices, this is so much more real and fulfilling.”

Helen started off providing respite care at weekends, which involved taking vulnerable children under her wing, and she now supports two 15-year-old girls.

They are already getting excited about Christmas and Helen has been busy making preparations.

She said: “We’ll have a great tree and enjoy all the build-up, including carols.

“We’ve already had a traditional trip to the Christmas shop in Lechlade to choose a special decoration.

“Then on the big day we’ll exchange presents in the morning before they go to see their parents and I catch up with mine.”

There are around 150 foster households in the borough and more are needed to meet demand, which can change at short notice. Fostering opportunities are available on short and long-term placements.

Carers receive payment and allowances to help cover their time and expenses, as well as free ongoing training, with 24/7 support.

Helen said: “There’s lots of support, so you feel prepared and reassured. Of course you don’t do it for the money, but the allowance covers things and means you can treat them at birthdays and Christmas.”

She says fostering is all about listening and giving your time.

Cllr Fionuala Foley, Swindon Borough Council Cabinet Member for Children Services, said: “Helen’s story is very moving, particularly as Christmas nears, because it shows the true power and pleasure of giving. I hope her inspiring experience will encourage others to consider whether fostering could be something for them too.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our amazing foster carers who work tirelessly throughout the year.
