AFTER learning that their school teacher was battling breast cancer a group of pupils at Churchfields Academy decided to round off the end of term by raising money for a cancer charity.
The pupils were raising money in aid of the radiotherapy unit planned for the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.
The week-long events which filled the final week of term were organised by pupils Abbie Smith, Sophie Fish, Karrieann Silvester and Ellie Sidebottom with the help of staff members Felicity Roberts and Caireen Young.
Fundraising events included a raffle, a cake sale, a penalty shootout, selling pink ribbons as well as a non-school uniform day on the final day of term.
The four students are in Miss Mandy Eyles Whites tutor group.
Abbie said “My tutor Miss White has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has been having treatment. Miss White told all the students and I thought it would be a nice idea to raise money for the radiotherapy unit that has been treating Miss White.”
Radiotherapy is a painless procedure which uses radiation, usually high energy x-rays, but sometimes, electrons, and more rarely protons, to treat disease. It can cure many cancers by destroying the tumor or stopping it from growing any further.
The students hope to raise over £500 in total and would like to thank everyone who has contributed.
