HOLY Cross Primary School welcomed workers from the NSPCC on Wednesday as part of their Speak Out and Stay Safe programme.

Year 5 pupils at the school on Upham Road were given a talk about spotting the signs of bullying or abuse and who to speak to.

Teacher James Green said: “It was about making them recognise bullying, sex abuse, cyber bullying and how they can protect themselves and make them aware where they can get help such as Childline or the NSPCC.

“Children in my class all learnt something and they were very good and very enthusiastic.

“They learnt a dance to remember the phone number of Childline and were told that it’s not always about if they’re feeling down, even if they are happy but want a chat they are there.

“We don’t do it for Year 4 as we think they are a bit too young to deal with everything that is talked about and Year 5 is the age where they can understand what is not right.

“We got the children to discuss what is appropriate and it’s important to teach children this because this will let them know when actions are wrong.

“Children need to know these things and that they shouldn’t suffer in silence.”

Assistant headteacher, Karen Salter, added: “It’s a programme that the NSPCC brought out in all schools encouraging people to be better aware.

“They are the experts and they say what children can do, what should children do and this is something that we encourage.”
