HIGH Post's Roger Searle convincingly won the Wiltshire Seniors' Championship for the second year running.

The nine-times Wiltshire amateur champion romped home six ahead of his nearest rival, clubmate and twice-champion Brian Townsend, with a round of 73 at Bowood.

Jerry Gegg (Chippenham) shared third place on 80 with John O'Dea (Bowood). John Lincoln (Chippenham) and Terry Mumford (West Wilts) were joint fifth on 81, Clive Burton (West Wilts) seventh on 82 and Roger Morton (Ogbourne Downs) eighth on 83.

  • FORMER Wiltshire amateur champion Alan Burch, playing off two, won Marlborough's Sprawson Trophy - but it was close.

Burch, who held the county title back in 1989 when at Broome Manor, edged a card play-off with Graham Jefferies (14), both scoring five under par nett 67. Dan Flattery (22) was third with 68.

Cards also had to be compared to decide the Roy McNair Cup at North Wilts. Eleven-handicappers E Howell and A Dodd tied on three under par nett 68, the issue being settled by Howell's superior back nine. A Slade (17) was third with 70.

  • MARLBOROUGH'S new general manager, Philip Jones, takes up his duties at the 119-year-old club on Tuesday.

Jones, who succeeds long-serving member John Sullivan, was previously general manager at Maidenhead Golf Club and held similar positions at Stinchcombe Hill, Gloucestershire, and Frinton, Essex.

An ex-Royal Navy helicopter pilot, he is in his 50s and married with a grown-up daughter.

Sullivan, a former pro player and past captain at Marlborough, is calling it a day after 10 years, but will be staying on for a while to help with the handover.

  • TWELVE-HANDICAP Matt Simpkins won the May midweek medal at Carswell on a countback after a tie on seven under par nett 65 with Tim Smith (21). Craig Wighton (17) was third with 66.

Tom Lightfoot (5), the 19-year-old son of club captain Bob Lightfoot, carded the best gross for the fifth consecutive medal of 75.

  • BROOME Manor junior Neil Puffett won the first division (0-15) of the Swindon municipal club's May Saturday medal with four under par nett 67, playing off six handicap. Mick Gregorace (5) was third with 69.

Division Two (16-28): R Brown (21) nett 67, Alan Barlow (16) nett 73.
