A MAN has been slapped with a restraining order after he assaulted his former partner and damaged her car after they broke up.

Bilal Uddin appeared before magistrates sitting in Swindon on Monday to be sentenced for a charge of assault dating from Thursday, January 28 and a further charge of damaging his victim’s car on the same occasion.

The 22-year-old of Broad Street previously pleaded guilty to both offences.

The pair had known each other for around a year and began a relationship in October, but it ended shortly after. Following this she had received numerous phone calls and text messages from Uddin.

The magistrates heard that Uddin had gone to the address of his victim’s new partner in the early hours of January 28 where she was awoken and saw him standing outside the property near her car.

Prosecuting, Keith Ballinger said that she had gone outside where she noticed that was damage to her car, including scratches, snapped wing mirrors and damage to the number plate. Uddin told her that she had put him through pain, so he was putting her through pain.

Later an argument broke out during which Uddin was alleged to have grabbed her face, although he disputes this and says he grabbed her by the arm. The police were called and arrested him nearby.

Mr Ballinger read her victim personal statements to the magistrates, detailing how Uddin’s conduct had affected her, revealing that her GP had suggested she see a counsellor to help her deal with the issues.

She wrote: “You made me feel weak, as though I was something you could walk over - like I was your property.”

Magistrates sentenced him to a community order for 12 months, during which he must carry out 20 rehabilitative activity days with the probation service as well as 150 hours of unpaid work.

He was ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs, a victim surcharge of £60 and pay compensation for the damage to a total of £885.85.

A restraining order was also put in place.
