SWINDON-based Nationwide Building Society will be amongst the first to offer its customers access to Android Pay when it launches in the UK in the coming months.

Nationwide customers will be able to use eligible Nationwide debit cards with Android Pay to make purchases within thousands of apps and pay for goods and services at almost 460,000 payment terminals across the country.

Tony Prestedge, Nationwide’s chief operating officer, said: “Each month there are 19 million logins to our mobile banking app and our members make over seven million contactless payments totalling £56 million.

"With Android Pay, Nationwide customers will have even greater choice in the way they purchase goods and services, highlighting the Society’s commitment to finding new innovative ways to help members manage their money at a time, in a place and in a way which suits them.”

In 2014, Nationwide became the first high street provider to offer customer service 24/7 on Twitter and in 1997, it was the first to offer internet banking in the UK.

Now millions of Nationwide members are using its mobile banking apps, online services and paying with contactless cards across the country and supporting Android Pay is the latest in a number of innovative customer focused developments from the Building Society.

Pali Bhat, senior director of product management at Google, said: “We're excited to bring the simplicity and security of mobile payments to Nationwide customers with Android Pay. Soon, people will be able to use their Android device to pay at almost 460,000 contactless payment terminals in the UK."
