A FATHER daughter duo are drumming up support ahead of their eight hour marathon performance to raise money for two charities close to their hearts.

Ken and Sophie Black will be playing the drums non-stop to tunes from the 70s and 80s, as well as a few classic and modern tracks, on Friday, June 3 at New College.

They have also hired a lighting and music technician to help add extra sparkle to the performance.

In exchange for the huge feat, and for filling New College hall with hours of music, they are hoping people will part with their cash and help raise a substantial amount for Scope and Cancer Research UK.

They chose to raise money for the disability charity Scope as New College student Sophie, 18, has cerebral palsy.

They also thought Cancer Research UK would be fitting as Ken’s dad Harry died aged 52 in 1980 from lung cancer when Ken was a teenager.

The mobile engineer said: “I just thought I wanted to do something to raise money in memory of my dad. I’ve been meaning to do it for a long time, so I thought I would just go for it and it is something that I enjoy.

“Me and Sophie will be taking it in turns to play the drums, we will have some breaks and just have fun.

“I’m a bit nervous but once I get into it and the adrenaline kicks in it will be great.”

While Ken, 52, has been playing the drums for 40 years and been in a number of bands, including the punk rock group Jelly Tots, Sophie is a little less experienced but still ready to take on the challenge.

She said: “I’m a little bit nervous but looking forward to it, it will be fun. Everyone thinks it’s really good."

Among the crowd who will be watching them will be mum and wife Penny and Sophie’s sisters Charlotte and Holly, as well as other family members.

Members of the public are invited to watch the pair from midday until 8pm and entry is by donation. Donations can also be made at their online page: justgiving.com/drummimgkingking
