FOOTBALL boss and legend Dave Turner will be remembered by hundreds this weekend as players take to the pitch in memory of the much-loved 52-year-old.

It is the second year a match has been organised in tribute to the respected non-league football coach, who was the manager of Shrivenham FC before he died from cardiomyopathy in 2014.

And Dave’s son James says his dad would be over the moon to know people are celebrating his life by doing what he loved the most.

The event on Sunday, at the County Ground from 2.30pm, will see his friends, family and people from the town’s footballing community come together to have a good time and raise hundreds of pounds for the Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust (STFITC).

James, 25, will be among almost 50 players taking part, while his brother Ali and mum Trish will be in the crowd cheering everyone on.

“I am looking forward to getting everyone together and raising as much money as possible and having a few drinks after. It is the best way to remember my dad by doing what he loved,” he said.

“He was very honest and committed. He loved winning and hated losing, which why the game will be so competitive.

“Dad would be over the moon there is a game going on and that everyone was getting together for a few beers afterwards. He loved that part of it, being with all the lads having a pint.

“Myself and STFITC have organised it with the help of Kevin Cook and Alan Blake who will be managers on the day, plus friends have put it on social media to try and spread the word.”

Kick-off will be at 3pm and entry is free but donations will be collected throughout the event. Last year the match, which was also in memory of car crash victim Jack Savage, raised more than £1,200.

All the money will go towards funding football courses during school terms for children with disabilities. Dave, who lived in Wroughton and also previously managed the Pewsey Vale and Royal Wootton Bassett teams, and the Wroughton youth team, was a coach for the trust for more than 12 years.

Everyone is welcome to attend the match and there will also be a raffle with dozens of prizes, including a signed Swindon football, signed Chelsea football, bottles of wine, larger, chocolates, football tickets and restaurant vouchers.

James added: “If we raised anywhere near what we did last year that would be amazing.”
